Culture during the Cold War \u2014 Guy Turbet-Delof in Budapest (1947\u20131958)<\/em> explores the place of culture and the arts in the turbulent first decade of the Cold War through the story of a French cultural diplomat\u2019s years in Hungary. It approaches the period from several perspectives: French diplomacy, the hostile gaze of the Hungarian political police, and Turbet-Delof\u2019s own outlook, shaped by literature and his personal convictions. It also considers how the artists who knew him may have seen him and brings together works they gave him. Finally, his daughter Christine Turbet-Delof\u2019s recollections reveal an intimate, closer look at his life in Hungary.<\/p>\n

As director of the French Institute in Budapest and cultural attach\u00e9, Guy Turbet-Delof has long been recognised by historians and literary scholars, chiefly for his 1956 diary and his French translation of Pet\u0151fi\u2019s J\u00e1nos vit\u00e9z<\/em> (John the Valiant). This exhibition turns to a less familiar aspect of his work: his relationship with the visual arts and with artists. He came to know a remarkable number of them and assisted many far beyond his official duties. For Turbet-Delof, cultural mediation was not merely a professional obligation but a personal mission pursued across the Iron Curtain.[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”20″ down=”20″][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”20″ down=”20″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”20″ down=”20″][vc_text_separator title=”FEATURED WORKS” border=”no”][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”20″ down=”20″][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”20″ down=”20″][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”25279,25312,25306,25303,25300,25297,25294,25291,25288,25285,25282,25276″ column_number=”4″ grayscale=”no” images_space=”gallery_without_space”][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”20″ down=”20″][vc_separator type=”transparent” up=”20″ down=”20″][vc_column_text]Turbet-Delof used diplomatic mail\u2014the diplomatic pouch\u2014and his own car to support Hungarian artists. He forwarded private letters and arranged for paintbrushes and musical scores to be sent to Hungary. He even helped people and works of art cross the border clandestinely: paintings by B\u00e9la Cz\u00f3bel and Endre Rozsda left the country with his assistance.<\/p>\n

For Endre Rozsda, who longed for freedom and chose exile, Turbet-Delof sought supporters and exhibition opportunities. After Rozsda established an international career, the French state commissioned a tapestry based on his painting Initiation<\/em>. In a fitting return, it came to hang at the French ambassador\u2019s residence in Budapest. This exceptional work now leaves the residence and goes on public display.<\/p>\n

The exhibition presents works by artists whose careers intersected with Turbet-Delof\u2019s work: large-scale paintings and smaller works on paper by Endre Rozsda; sculptures and sculptural studies by Lajos Barta; and works by B\u00e9la Cz\u00f3bel, Tibor Vilt, M\u00e1rk Vedres and G\u00e9za Gorka.
